Massage therapy licensing guidelines: Tennessee

The Tennessee Board of Massage Licensure oversees and regulates the licensure of massage therapists in Tennessee. Education levels, passage of certification examinations and criminal background checks are examined in order for applicants to be approved for licensing. Tennessee escorts who are looking to become massage therapists must follow these guidelines:

  • Applicants must provide a certified copy of their birth certificates providing proof that they are over the age of 18 years old.
  • Candidates must affix a passport-style photograph of themselves to the application. The picture must not be more than 12 months old.
  • Applicants must provide proof of board-approved massage therapy education that includes at least 500 hours of instruction. Proof may be provided with official transcripts. The education must include a curriculum consisting of:
    • 200 hours of anatomy, kinesiology, pathology and hygiene, among other subjects
    • 200 hours of basic massage therapy and practice, history and indications and others
    • 85 hours of business standards of practice, communication skills, CPR, first aid and other topics
    • 10 hours of ethics
    • 5 hours of Tennessee massage therapy statutes and regulations
  • Candidates must provide official test scores indicating passage of the National Certification Examination for Therapeutic Massage and Bodyworks (NCETMB).
  • Applicants must submit two professional references attesting to their good moral character from health care professionals.
  • Candidates must disclose any past convictions, previous licensures or disciplinary actions against them and past lawsuits involving their practice of massage therapy. Any convictions of sexually-related crimes or prostitution-related crimes will be cause for licensure denial.
  • Applicants must submit to a criminal background check.
  • Candidates must complete their applications fully and have them notarized. All applications must be accompanied by the application fee and must be in English.
  • Candidates seeking a reciprocity license due to their work in another state must present a completed, notarized application and a copy of the state's statutes from where they come.
  • Licensed massage therapists must renew their licenses every two years and acquire 25 hours of continuing education as a basic requirement.
