Massage therapy licensing guidelines: South Carolina

South Carolina's laws regulating the issuance of massage therapy licenses are simple and brief, especially in accordance with many states in the U.S. South Carolina escorts who wish to transition their services to those of a massage therapists still have to take some specific classes and pass a national certification examination, but the guidelines otherwise are quite simple. All applicants who are seeking licensure in South Carolina as a massage therapy must meet these guidelines:

  • Applicants must be 18 years old or older.
  • Candidates for licensure must be U.S. citizens or legal immigrants.
  • Applicants must have acquired a high school diploma or a Graduate Equivalency Degree (GED).
  • Candidates are required to submit official test scores showing passage of the National Certification Examination for Therapeutic Massage and Bodyworks (NCETMB) or the Massage and Bodyworks Licensure Examination (MBLEx).
  • Applicants are required to produce evidence in the form of original transcripts of massage therapy education that consisted of at least 500 hours of course instruction from an approved massage/bodyworks school or program.
  • Candidates must complete, sign and get their applications notarized prior to sending to the South Carolina Board of Massage and Bodywork Therapy. An application fee that is non-refundable must be submitted with the application. The fee may be paid by check or money order.
  • Licensees must pay the renewal fee and provide proof of 12 hours of continuing education in order to renew their licenses.
  • Out-of-state applicants may become licensed through reciprocity if the standards of their home state are similar or nearly equivalent to South Carolina's guidelines. Passage of the national examination is required for all transferring license applicants.
