Massage therapy licensing guidelines: Idaho

While Idaho passed several guidelines for massage therapy licensure in 2002, the state is now a Freedom of Access state with health freedom laws. Practitioners must display evidence of their credentials and provide patients with a bill of rights in order to legally practice alternative medicine. With no category of its own, massage therapy is included in the alternative medicine division.

An escort who is interested in incorporating massage therapy expertise into her services is wise to pursue formal training and education about massage therapy. Many educational programs are offered to help someone gain experience and knowledge about massage therapy.

Previous guidelines for licensure included completion of high school, minimum age of 18 years old and possession of good moral character. While these guidelines are not currently in effect for licensing requirements, a massage therapist is wise to meet them.

Although licensing is not required to become a massage therapist, questionable behavior can cause someone to lose the opportunity to practice massage therapy. Anyone who commits fraud in patient records, practices under the influence of drugs or alcohol, practices despite being declared mentally incompetent or engages in lewd, indecent or obscene acts with a client may lose privileges to practice alternative medicine.

Additionally, massage therapists working in Idaho are prohibited from making medical diagnoses or providing medical care. They are required to refer patients to health care professionals.
