Massage therapy licensing guidelines: Denver

Because the Massage Therapy Practice Act went into effect in April 2009, Denver (the city or the county) no longer requires massage therapists who practice within its boundaries to acquire a license within its jurisdiction. The Massage Therapy Practice Act requires that all practicing massage therapists who wish to work in Colorado must be registered. Registration guarantees that a professional may use the professional titles and abbreviations of: "massage therapist," "registered massage therapist," "massage practitioner," "masseuse," "masseur,""M.T." and "R.M.T."

The guidelines for registration in Colorado are very similar to those specifications required of licensed massage therapists in other states in the U.S. Registration recognizes true professionals who have worked hard to acquire their knowledge and skills. Massage therapy is often a preferred transitional career for many escorts and requires a personal touch by professionals.

Guidelines for registration include:

  • Registered massage therapists must acquire at least 500 hours of clinical and course work from a board- approved massage school. Official transcripts and proof of graduation are required for registration.
  • Massage therapists must pass one of three different examinations for registration:
    • National Certification Examination for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork
    • Federation of State Massage Therapy Board Massage and Bodywork Exam (MBLEx)
    • Examination approved by the State of Colorado - Dept. of Regulatory Agencies
  • Registrants must submit a completed application form and an application fee. The form requires inclusion of contact information, education details and specifics about the individual's experience.
  • Applicants must submit to the administration of a criminal history record check. A full set of fingerprints and a background check fee must be submitted so the Colorado Bureau of Investigation may conduct a state and federal background check. Any criminal convictions are potential grounds for registration denial.
  • Massage therapists who are licensed in other states with comparable guidelines may be awarded registration upon application.
  • Registered massage therapists must maintain professional liability insurance at all times. Proof is required for registration.
  • Illegal acts may cause immediate revocation of registration. Acts that may require revocation are:
    • Engagement in a sexual act with a client. (A sexual act may include sexual contact, sexual intrusion or sexual penetration.)
    • Fraudulent information on the application for registration.
    • Conviction of felonies discovered through a background check or occurring after becoming registered.
    • Dependent use or illegal use of alcohol or other habit-forming drugs or controlled substances.
