Massage therapy licensing guidelines: Alaska

Massage therapists in Alaska are not required to meet statewide regulations to become licensed as practicing professionals. However, many communities throughout the state require their municipal guidelines be met for a professional to practice massage therapy in their boundaries. Escorts who wish to become licensed massage therapists in Alaska should check with their local governments in order to learn more about local guidelines and regulations for massage therapy businesses.

Valdez is one community that regulates licensing of massage therapists. The application process in Valdez is quite simple and includes disclosure of past licensing information and criminal history. Potential licensees must provide proof of at least 500 hours of massage therapy from a credible school or massage therapy program. If an applicant doesn't have the education required, this qualification may be disregarded if an applicant has passed a national certification examination such as the National Certification Examination for Therapeutic Massage and Bodyworks (NCETMB). Finally, Valdez requires candidates possess an Alaskan business license and a Valdez business registration.

Fairbanks also oversees the licensing of massage therapists within its city limits. Applicants for licenses must have received at least 350 hours of education for massage therapy from an approved school or program or be a member of a professional massage organization that requires adherence to a code of ethics or pass the National Certification Examination for Therapeutic Massage and Bodyworks (NCETMB) or possess a license in another state or community. Additionally, a clean criminal history report is required.

Anchorage requires all applicants for massage therapy licensing to obtain a state business license, pass a criminal background check and be at least 18 years of age. Additionally, transcripts showing that an applicant has received at least 500 hours of education in the field of massage therapy or proof of passage of a national certifying examination such as the NCETMB is necessary in order to become licensed.
